Home Away with Nguyen Truong
Hello friends, it is quite interesting to see how this summer holiday is fast running as we are already in the middle of the month of June. Also, it is another interesting summer period with 24hrs day (no darkness) most especially here in Oulu region. For most International students like me, if we were told before now, that there is a country in world where they usually have 24hrs day during summer period, most of us would have hardly believed it until now that we are experiencing it here in Oulu, Finland. What a very lovely and friendly weather!
As we are already warming up for another week end, I will be having on “Home and Away” blog, an international student from the school of business here in Oulu Uas. She hails from a beautiful country called Vietnam and she will be 21 by October this year (I hope she invites us for her birthday when that time comes..haha). Her full name is Nguyen Truong Tuyet Nhung. She arrived Finland on the 18th of August 2011 and according to her she was a bit scared of almost everything being her first journey outside her home country and family. I guess almost everybody feels same when they arrive any country that they have not being to before!
When I asked her to share with us some of his experiences since she has been here in Oulu for some months now and how she feels for example, about the cold weather, the dark weather and also the snow and below was her response:
“The first experience to Oulu was not so impressive for me. It rained and the first scene through the window of the train was not so beautiful, it made me feel disappointed a little bit. Then it was over when I got inside the city. I did not have any difficulties since I arrived in Oulu because I had a very devoted and helpful tutor who helped me in everything.
The Weather is the only one challenge for me at the beginning. I like cold and snow but sometimes it can be so annoying! When I looked outside the window, the sky was so perfect and clear then I expect it not to be cold but its freaky chilly and I just wear so thin clothes! So u can imagine how it was at that time. I am the night owl so the dark weather is good for me. But so much dark weather makes me sleepy all the time and lazy to get school as well. Snow is one of my reasons to come here. It beautiful at the beginning but so ugly when it melting ”
Have you been having fun since you came? If yes, can you tell me some of the places that you have visited to catch your fun? This was another question I asked her and she responded thus:
“I have fun every day since I came here. I had fun in Nalikari, Tuira where people went there for ice-swimming, Oulu Hall for playing badminton, city center for crowded and living atmosphere, Tietoma for museum! Santa-Clause in Roveniemi. Joined Christmas day with Finnish family in Lapland!!! Have a crazy trip with friend to Tallin, Estonia and Stockholme, Sweden by cruise trip. It was so amazing! ”
Again, it was time to ask Nguyen Truong if she has met some Finnish people and also for her to tell us her general opinion about them. This is because when you are new to any environment, you would want to first of all, observe the people of that environment and how they behave so that you will be able to understand and get along with them. Here was her response also: “ They are definitely friendly and cute. But the guys are a little shy. But it seems too hard to make close friend with them... We can talk but not have so close friend not easy like Vietnamese friend.”
Apart from studies, what else do you enjoy doing at your spare time? I asked her again, knowing from her previous responses that there could be other things or hobbies that she could enjoy doing other than studies. Here was her response also: “ I do some sport: badminton, swimming or join some sport class offering from Sport Pass Club. Or we gather and play billiard, ping-pong or soccer table. ”
Finally, her general opinion as an international student, about Oulu University of Applied Sciences was of interest to me and when I asked her of these, she replied: “ I like the school. Cheap meals, qualified equipment for student, friendly classroom and not so big. The teaching method is quite different from my country. It tends to more practical. I like doing report, presentation every course which help me to build up confidence and skill.”
